Thomas N. Scheffel received his Juris doctor degree from Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1976 and a Masters of Law in Taxation from New York University School of Law in 1977.
He has been practicing law in Denver, Colorado since 1977 and opened his own firm, Thomas N. Scheffel and Associates, P.C. in 1983. The firm's areas of practice include business, commercial law and tax exempt organizations with his personal emphasis in tax and complicated estate planning. Specifically with respect to the firm's non-profit organization practice (tax exempt organizations), the firm has represented churches, private and church schools and Para church organizations on various issues with special emphasis on tax related matters, both at the state and federal level. Much of their work deals specifically with issues and activities directly and indirectly affecting tax exempt status. In addition, issues related to land use and property tax exemption are likewise addressed regularly. Specifically, Mr. Scheffel has testified on a number of occasions before the Property Tax Administrator Rule Making Panel on Para church use of church property and related issues.
Also, as general counsel to a number of multifaceted non-profit organizations, the firm's representation regularly addresses the ever expanding multiplicity of issues impacting tax exempt organizations, including all aspects of:

In addition, Mr. Scheffel serves on the Board of Trustees as general counsel to Colorado Christian University. He currently serves on the Metro Denver Advisory Board of the Salvation Army and on the Estate Planning Council of Wheaton College.
